Quality Construction, Lots of Features for the Money - UPDATED June 2011
After years of playing my Yamaha DGX-500, I was looking to upgrade my digital piano to something that had graded hammer action, that would look nice in my living room, and that sounded as close to an acoustic piano as possible. I also wanted to spend around a thousand bucks. The Casio AP420, seemed to fit the bill, and having played other Casio digital pianos in my local music store (PX800, PX330, AP200), I was fairly confident in making this purchase from Amazon, sight-unseen.The mangled box arrived in less than a week, looking like it had fallen off the truck or had been used for target practice. I was almost afraid to look inside. Fortunately, the engineers who designed the packaging did a marvelous job. Every piece was removed from the box in perfect condition. Assembly of the piano was not difficult, took less than an hour, and really did require two people. The cabinet of the AP420 is quite attractive. I like the sliding keyboard cover, and the faux...

it's a good purchase, would recommend
i don't play the digital music. i need a digital piano because i live in an apartment, this is easier to move, and i can wear headsets when playing in the middle of the night, and very important, it's affordable to me. i did some research about different brands of digital pianos. people are talking about yamaha is good. when talking about casio, the general review is that casio wasn't good before, but it's catching up fast these years. so i went down to couple of dealers to give it a try. considering the sound, key touch, price, i decided to buy this model. i tried another series, not celviano, from casio, even more expensive, but the touches is not as good as this one. and the sound is good at both low and high pitches. an equivalent model for yamaha is selling around 1800 + tax. i personally don't feel like spending 800$ for the brand.i do play acoustic pianos at school. i have to say that the key touch is still different. it cannot compare with the upright ones, and...

Great Piano for the Price!
I purchased this digital piano because the one I had was out of date. And because I teach piano online and needed something that sounded like a real piano. Well, I wasn't disappointed. The difference between the old Roland and this new Casio is like night and day!The touch is fantastic. The piano sound is fantastic. And since I really only need the piano sound, that was of primary importance to me.If you've been wary of buying this because of the 'Casio' name, put your worries to rest. Casio is to digital pianos as to what Samsung now is to television. They're now poised to become the #1 resource. My recommendation? Buy it before the price goes up.

Excellent budget digital piano.
We were on a tight budget when we bought this a couple of years ago, at Costco for CDN$799. Our son was 4, and we were getting ready to enrol him in lessons. I did not play piano growing up, but I can play many other instruments, and have played professionally in bars for 23 years. My main goals were to get something that would:1) approximate the feel of a real piano. = does a very good job. The weighted keys respond nicely to speed and pressure. You can play loud or soft, with no buzz. There is some mild 'clunking' on some of the keys, but I've noticed that on real pianos. I would NOT say that the touch is the SAME as a real piano, but it's close.2) approximate the sound of a real piano. = I think the sound is excellent. One of the only ways I notice a difference is that it's so homogeneous in volume and tone and tuning that it couldn't be real. It's also great to be able to say to my son "Can you turn that down a bit, please? We're trying to...

A great digital piano for apartment living
I missed playing piano since moving into my new apartment, but wanted something that would give me the experience of playing on an acoustic piano - weighted keys, and a more substantial, 'furniture-y' appearance than just a keyboard. This piano was a fantastic deal, with lots of features and the very necessary headphone capability for apartment living. Most importantly, the sound of the piano is very good, even coming from past experiences on grand pianos - it sounds like an acoustic upright. The resonance of the higher notes is better than that of the much lower, but it's not very noticeable when playing.Came with clear instructions. Assembly took two people and over 30 minutes. Once assembled, however, it's difficult to move the piano, so keep that in mind when you're getting it set up. Also, the included bench is built like a rock but is still comfortable.Overall, I'm thrilled with this purchase. I'm not sure what other extra features you get for the...

Great First Piano!!!
We got this piano for our two boys (4 & 2-1/2) to help them begin to learn how to play music. This piano makes it so easy for them with the colored key code that fits above the keys so that they can follow along with the music book. The look on their faces as they play (and sing along) with the songs is absolutely adorable! For us, we found the sound of the piano to be fine - no issues. One nice thing is that it's just loud enough...if you know what I mean. This keeps them occupied for hours on end.Five stars for this purchase - you won't be disappointed with this piano...and your kids will love it!!!

Wonderful Toy...
I purchased this piano for my one-year-old niece, who loves music. It has quickly become one of her favorite toys, which will no doubt provide entertainment for her for years to come. The bright colors are adorable and the sound quality is pretty darn good for a toy. Highly recommend!

Great for younger kids too
My Mom insisted on buying this for my 1 year old twins even though it suggests that it is suitable for 3 years and up. Well, they love it. They hammer on it, stand on it and pull it over. It is very robust. It is sufficiently in tune to play your favorite songs and comes with a handy little song book (probably more use to a 3 year old than my 1 year olds).

Great Lamp for the Money
After purchasing a new Casio AP-420 Digital Piano from Amazon, I was in the market for a new piano lamp. I was shocked to find that the typical piano lamp sells for anywhere from 75 to 200 US dollars! I'm sure those other lamps are quite nice, but I wasn't about to shell out that kind of dough. Luckily, I stumbled across this lamp on Amazon. It is cute, has a wonderful satin finish, and yes, it even looks nice on my piano - every bit as nice as one of those hundred dollar lamps, I'm sure. The angle of the arm is adjustable, as is the 'tilt' of the lamp head. It requires a 40W or less standard base T-Type bulb, which wasn't included. If you need a piano lamp and don't have money to burn, you can't go wrong with this one.

Hits All The Right Keys
David Abbott starts his mesmerizing and haunting debut book, The Upright Piano Player, with a quote from Nietzsche: "The consequences of our actions take hold of us, quite indifferent to our claims that meanwhile we have improved."It's an apt quote because indeed, actions have consequences in the case of his protagonist, Henry Cage. Henry is, indeed, a caged man - uptight, disconnected, and alienated. Throughout his life, he has amassed the trappings of success: a sterling career, a spirited and beautiful wife, a sensitive son, an elegant London townhome. Yet he has squandered his gifts, eventually losing his marriage, destroying his relationship with his son, and ending his partnership in his firm - not of his own accord. And then, on the eve of the millennium, a random act of violence occurs. Henry inadvertently pushes into a stranger on the crowded Westminster Bridge during a New Year's Eve encounter. The stranger, Colin, is an angry and vindictive...

"upright" motives in a complex world...
THE UPRIGHT PIANO PLAYER by David Abbott places the main character in threatening and sometimes horrific circumstances and asks how our decisions, even with the best intentions, effect others? Why do our positive, dynamic, and reasoned public selves not always translate to our private lives? When should we actively intercede to make amends, and correct past relationships, and when should we remain passive, accept earlier decisions and move on?Henry Cage has experienced success in his professional life, but in retirement, the well exercised reasoned part of his mind is not enough to protect him from the the regrets and pain of the past with his ex-wife and son. Are his "upright" motives enough to mend past relationships and secure a positive future for all? David Abbott, in his first novel, presents us with a character tossed about by life's circumstances and the tolls paid for engagement. The book opens with a quote from Nietzsche:"The consequences of our...

Nihilism personified
It begins at the end, a narrative format that is apt and deeply seated in the story's nihilistic philosophy. It exemplifies the antithesis of the slogan "Practice random acts of kindness and senseless beauty." The novel asserts that all of us are subject to random acts. Period. Of senselessness, violence, beauty, cruelty, and yes, also kindness. Beginning at the end is a way for the author to clarify the theme that we are not subject to fate or karma-- life is pointless, meaningless, without intrinsic value. The value we place on life, therefore, is an artificial construction.Cynical? Well, it certainly is discomfiting, and a despairing standard to live by. On the other hand, it illustrates that there is no "one way" of being, of perching a personal or social doctrine. Abbott prefaced the book with a quote by Nietzsche, prince of nihilism, and an equally philosophical quote by E.E. Cummings, leaving no doubt about the outlook of this story.Henry Cage is...

Product Description

An adroit first novel of exceptional grace and emotional power by a legendary British ad executive.

“David Abbott’s The Upright Piano Player is a wise and moving debut, an accomplished novel of quiet depths and resonant shadows.” —John Burnham Schwartz, author of The Commoner and Reservation Road

Henry Cage seems to have it all: a successful career, money, a beautiful home, and a reputation for being a just and principled man. But public virtues can conceal private failings, and as Henry faces retirement, his well-ordered life begins to unravel. His ex-wife is ill, his relationship with his son is strained to the point of estrangement, and on the eve of the new millennium he is the victim of a random violent act which soon escalates into a prolonged harassment.

As his ex-wife's illness becomes grave, it is apparent that there is little time to redress the mistakes of the past. But the man stalking Henry remains at large. Who is doing this? And why? David Abbott brilliantly pulls this thread of tension ever tighter until the surprising and emotionally impactful conclusion. The Upright Piano Player is a wise and acutely observed novel about the myriad ways in which life tests us—no matter how carefully we have constructed our own little fortresses. Top to learn more

Questions for David Abbott on The Upright Piano Player

Q: After a successful career in advertising of nearly 40 years, why did you decide to write this book?

A: I was a copywriter for over forty years and it kept me ludicrously busy. I know some would-be novelists sit at the kitchen table and write throughout the night, grabbing only a few hours sleep before they go off to their day jobs, but I couldn’t do that, because I was already sitting at that table writing ads into the small hours. The truth is, I wanted to be a good copywriter and I didn’t think I could be, if I did it only to pay the rent while my heart was really engaged with fiction. So, I waited until I retired. I had always felt that one day I would try to write something else – a novel, short stories, a screenplay, lyrics, jokes – I wasn’t sure which. But first I wanted a rest from deadlines, so I didn’t plunge straight into writing. I made a garden, converted a house, read a lot of books, and watched the world go by from pavement cafes in favorite cities – no writing as such, but I did start to keep a notebook. And in 1999, on the eve of the new millennium, my wife and I actually made the homeward journey that Henry Cage makes in the book. Of course, I wasn’t attacked, but that journey recorded in my notebook was the genesis of The Upright Piano Player.

Q: Why did you name the book The Upright Piano Player?

A: The title came late. Whenever I needed a break from the slog of the main narrative, I would amuse myself by filling pages of an exercise book with prospective titles. On one of these jags I wrote the word ‘Upright’ – to describe Henry. It seemed made for him with its association with goodness and virtue but it is a word that also carries a nuance of “stiff” and “unbending” which is not inappropriate either. It took me a long time to make the “Upright” connection between Henry and his piano, but when I did I whooped with joy. The elation lasted a day. “Just what everyone will expect from an advertising writer” – I said to myself – “a pun, the very lowest form of wit.” When I first showed the manuscript to a publisher it had another title, but I couldn’t forget “The Upright Piano Player” and I soon restored it to its rightful place. Pun or not, I love it.

Q: Which of the characters do you identify with the most in the novel?

A: I know you expect me to say Henry, and it’s true I gave him some of my bookish and artistic enthusiasms and much of my geography, but the fact is I identify with all the characters in the book. How could I not? Some play bigger roles than others, but they all have some of me in them.

Q: Which character was most fun to write?

A: It’s a toss-up between Colin and Jack. Because Colin is by nature unpredictable he often took me by surprise. I had no plans for him to kill the dog when he went into the yard to puncture the tires, but he would, wouldn’t he? That kind of playback is exciting for a writer (says he grandly on his first book). I enjoyed writing about Jack, too. In many ways he is the reverse of Henry; socially at ease where Henry is a loner. I like Jack’s humanity and straight talking. He reminds me of several American men I know. I’m happy he was at Nessa’s bedside when she died.

Q: Why did you decide to begin the book with an event in Henry’s life that chronologically takes place after the rest of the book? Did you ever think about positioning the beginning of the book at the end?

A: I did this partly because it was the harder thing to do and made the book different, but mostly because I couldn’t bear it to be at the end. I put myself in the position of the readers of the book. They have just read a story of a lonely man finding a way to reunite with his family after a 5-year estrangement. He has had a run of bad luck (or bad decisions) but he is feeling his way to reconciliation. In the process, he discovers a grandson and loses a wife, but he has made his peace and reorganizes his life to work and spend time with his son and his family. To then hit the reader with the catastrophe of the grandson’s death seemed to me too manipulative. I feared they would feel cheated. Several people, including a couple of publishers, did suggest that I put the accident in its chronological place at the end of the book, but I couldn’t. For me, the overarching tragedy at the beginning adds depth and poignancy to the story. Many readers have told me that on finishing the book they go back to Part One and read it again, hoping it isn’t true. I know how they feel.

Q: What is your favorite moment in Henry’s life? What is your least favorite?

A: I like Henry most when he is nice to Nessa and dislike him most when he isn’t.

Q: Controlling your life’s path versus falling into a premeditated destiny seems to be an underlying theme throughout the book. What do you think about destiny and especially the way each of the characters transcend this theme?

A: I married an Irish girl when I was twenty-three and not wanting to be left out of any part of her life, I always went to Mass with her. Five years later I took instruction and became a Catholic myself, but to be honest I had been interested in fate and consequence long before then. Do we get what we deserve in life? Or is life just a series of random accidents? The two epigrams at the start of the book illustrate the two opposing viewpoints and so, too, in the book, do Henry and Jack. At one point, Henry blames a recent misfortune on his ‘various failings’ and Jack responds “It was wrong time, wrong place – that’s all, Henry. There’s no big finger pointing down from the sky.” As an author I remain neutral and leave the reader to blame Henry a little, a lot, or not at all. As a man, I can’t believe that people get what they deserve – bombs still fall on the innocent, disease still strikes down the kindly and the good and there is still feast and famine. But on the other hand, I kind of believe you get time off for good behavior.

Q: What is next for you?

A: I am on the lower foothills of the next novel. It’s too soon to tell you what it’s about, but I’m nervous and excited about where the story is heading.

In elementary school my parents bought a used piano for me to practice on. Found in a newspaper ad at a reasonable price of $250 and kept in someone’s finished basement in Great Falls Montana, I absolutely fell in love with it. I mean, come on. It... I was too sentimentally attached to it, so when my grandmother died, I pleaded with my mom to take the piano back and keep it in her home until I had a home of my own. She came to the house once a week, and I learned to really play on my piano. When I was a girl, I loved to play piano. I had an old piano just like this growing up. It was my great grandmother’s, and was from the early 1900s, I think. The previous owner said it was originally used as a saloon piano in Montana. I absolutely adore my piano. No piano teacher could hold a candle to her. My piano teacher was an amazing lady named Leslie. Once I had a home of my own, I had no room for the massive upright in all its ornate mahogany loveliness.

Antique piano benches also come in three different designs like the upright piano bench, piano and organ stool, as well as adjustable piano chair. This type of piano bench was normally sold together with the upright piano as well as various home pianos of the earlier part of the 20th century. The rise of smaller console pianos along with spinet pianos raised the recognition of upright pianos in 1930s in several residences. As a result of amazing popular features of antique piano benches, quite a few piano fanatics and also vintage collectors enjoy to own them at homes and even at piano parlors. Practically, adjustable piano chair is a piano bench using back support. Among the most well-known types of classic piano bench is definitely the pedestal style organ stool or most frequently acknowledged as organ stool. Determined pianists liked the effectiveness of upright piano benches when compared with making them a great Victorian décor.
